SHDHS AP Scholar Awards

WORLD QUEST CHAMPIONS!
Sean Connolly, David Chestnut, Andrew Carroll and Eric Robinson, under the tutelage of Mr. Matt Wahlert, won 1st place in Greater Cincinnati's very first regional Academic World Quest competition,.  The competition is organized by the World Affairs Council at the Global Center of Greater Cincinnati and Xavier University.  They also won an all-expenses paid trip as our region's representatives to the National Competition in Washington D.C.
"In an increasingly interdependent world, our students have to remain engaged in global issues.  This competition does that in an interesting and fun way.  It is a first step toward responsible global citizenship," said Karlee Hilliard, Global Center board member and sponsor.
"Each student has been interested in international politics and international affairs and they do independent research and reading on Web sites, the New York Times, and the London Times.  It takes a lot of work and study to succeed at this level," says Mr. Wahlert.

Did you know that for the past ten years, SHDHS has sent more students to the Governor’s Scholars Program than any other high school in Northern Kentucky? The Class of 2006 sent TEN students to the  Governor's Scholars Program. The Governor’s Scholars Program is a stimulating, five week, residential summer academic program for outstanding high school juniors. This prestigious program provides academic and personal growth in a non-traditional experience. Students from SHDHS were selected on the basis of test scores from the PSAT, SAT or ACT. Their unweighted GPA and difficulty of course load was also taken into consideration. Students submitted a writing entry and demonstrated what they have done in the areas of extracurricular activities and service. Students were selected in January and their names were submitted to the State of Kentucky for the competition.

Crusader Earns Admission to the
2006 Governor’s School for the Arts!

Stephanie Wallenfelsz auditioned and was invited to attend the prestigious Governor School for the Arts. The school will be conducted on the Transylvania University campus in Lexington, Kentucky. While there, students will live in a supportive learning environment and study with a group of distinguished teaching artists. They will also have the opportunity to auction for scholarships before the nation’s top colleges and universities. This year, over 1400 high school sophomores and juniors from Kentucky auditioned at four regional sites across the state. From this number, 218 were invited to attend Kentucky’s premier summer arts program. Stephanie’s field of discipline is drama.

Fine Arts Scholarships
Ryan Hallman was selected for a prestigious Mother McCauley Fine Arts Scholarship from Xavier University.

Northern Kentucky Youth Leadership Program
Amanda Wagner, Class of 2008, will be representing SHDHS in the Northern Kentucky Youth Leadership Program. Four candidates were nominated by the Counseling Department with input from teachers, based on leadership, academics, and community service. The Northern Kentucky Youth Leadership Council chose one representative from each school. Amanda will attend workshops and seminars once each month throughout the school year.

The Class of Kentucky
Julie Wischer was selected for the Class of Kentucky, a UK sponsored program recognizing the top high school sophomores in the state of Kentucky. Julie was selected based on scholarship: GPA, PSAT scores, etc.

Students Form new campus Group

Hillary Otte, 2006, and Amanda Bockweg, 2009, have pioneered the effort to start a new student group on campus this year called the St. Maria Goretti Society. It is a student support group focused on promoting chastity. May 2006 will be the date for their first newsletter publication, "Real Love Waits". It features all kinds of information including student articles, information about chastity in general, books to read, websites to visit, a "Comeback Corner" that features examples of things you can say when someone is coming on too strong, and contact information if you are looking for someone to talk to right away. "This is definitely something we need here at SHDHS. Many of our students don’t really know what chastity is, and they don’t know the reasons why it is a good decision," says Hillary. Mandy agrees, "I watch friends and classmates struggle with relationships all the time. We need a support group for students to go to for help and information." 2006 members of the St. Maria Goretti Society are: Lindsey Gough, Jessica Green, Sarah Kloentrup, Katie Janowiecki, Alexa Hasbrouck, Liz Kaiser, Jessica Montjoy, Julia Wright, Michi Steffen, Erinn Torbeck, Sam Yung, Kelsey Limbach, Bethany Haacke, Sam Mustian and Sean Connolly. Faculty Advisors are Maureen Donnellan, Gina Ruehl, Ann Maloney, Pamela Kammerer, Jennifer Zumbiel, and Eric Neuhaus.

Computer Science at SHDHS
The media has been reporting that large numbers of Information Technology and software development positions are being outsourced to other countries. This is contrary to recent reports indicating that software-engineering positions in the U.S. are expected to grow by 49% during the next ten years.

At the university level the number of students pursuing studies in Computer Science are dropping. Attrition rates are high in introductory computer Science courses, and NKU has instituted a peer-tutoring program in which upper-class Computer Science students are paid to mentor and tutor beginning programming students in an effort to improve retention and attract more students. There is growing concern in the industry about these trends – where will employers find the qualified computer professionals they need here in the US?

SHDHS is one of a small number of high schools that offers its students to opportunity to experience a formal Computer Science course. Although it is rare that students enter college with formal training in computer science, SHDHS actually offers student the opportunity to study up to TWO years of Computer Science.

First year students study the C++ programming language. C++ covers material offered in a one-semester college level course, but at a pace more suitable to high school students. C++ has been offered at SHDHS since 1998 and many students who have studied C++ at SHDHS have gone on to study and excel in college-level programming classes. Second year students study the JAVA programming language. Java was first offered at SHDHS during the 2004-2005 school year. At this time the official AP Computer Science language was changed from C++ to Java.

In 2004 and 2005 ten students at SHDHS earned a 3 or better on the AP Computer Science A Test, earning college credit for their work as high school students. The College Board, administrator of the AP curriculum, recently released state-by-state results for 2005. Statewide in Kentucky 84 students received a 3 or better on the AP Computer Science A Test, with only 20 of those students coming from non-public schools. Six of those 20 students were from SHDHS.

There are still spaces available in Computer Science at SHDHS for the upcoming school year. Enrollment does require recommendation from a student’s Geometry or Algebra 2 teacher. For more information, contact Peggy Myatt at pmyatt@shdhs.org.
