Pre-College Curriculum: In order to attend college in
Kentucky, a student must fulfill the basic graduation requirements as well as
accumulate a minimum of 24 credits. These credits include seventeen required
credits plus seven electives. Beginning with the Class of 2004, students need
two years of a foreign language as part of the pre-college curriculum. Electives
should be in social studies, science, mathematics, English and language arts,
arts and humanities, nonnative (foreign) language, and, above the introductory
level, in agriculture, industrial technology, business, marketing, family and
consumer sciences, health sciences, and technology education, and career
pathways. Ohio and Indiana additionally require two credits in fine arts (art,
drama, and/or music) for college entrance.
Placement: Placement in particular courses and in
accelerated courses is based on three factors: entrance test results, eighth
grade teacher evaluations, and parent/student preferences.
