The President’s Volunteer Service Award is offered to students who have volunteered at least 100 hours over a 12-month period.  This student went well beyond the minimum requirements by volunteering most of her 131 hours at Cherry Hill Swim Club and St. Henry Church.  We appreciate her commitment to service and congratulate Kaitlin Staverman for being awarded this service award.

St. Michael’s College Book Award for Scholarship and service seeks to recognize students who exhibit the characteristics based specifically on achievement in academics and community service.  Nominees selected must be inductees of the National Honor Society and demonstrate a sustained and sincere commitment to community service.  They also receive a copy of the book “First They Killed My Father – A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers”.  We are proud to announce that the recipients of this year’s Scholarship and Service Book Award are Jacob Bessler and Maya Pillai

The University of Notre Dame Club of Greater Cincinnati Book Award is given to students who exhibit high academic achievement, demonstrate consistent and competent leadership, and have commitment to community service.  The 2008 Notre Dame Club Book Award goes to senior, Sean Connolly.

Last year, the University of Louisville recognized outstanding juniors across the State of Kentucky and Southern Indiana who showed academic promise, intellectual curiosity, and are civic-minded with the Yarmuth Book Award.  Each award recipient demonstrated this desire to learn through their various academic and extra-curricular activities while remaining in the top 20% of the class.  The 2008 Yarmuth Book Award goes to senior, Maya Pillai.

Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award is given each year to one junior for outstanding achievement in the field of science.  Students honored with this award also receive a scholarship to the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY.  Last year, Andrew Linkugel was chosen to receive this award.

Six St. Henry seniors had the honor of being selected to attend the 2008 Governor's Scholars Program over the summer.  Jacob Bessler, Sean Connolly, Andrew Linkugel, Maya Pillai, Eric Riedinger, and Amanda Bockweg met strict academic and personal admission criteria in order to be chosen.  By attending the Governors' Scholars Program these students will be eligible for many full tuition scholarships at Kentucky colleges.

The Governor’s School for the Arts offers students a chance to hone their skills in various areas of the fine arts field.  Two St. Henry students were chosen to attend based on a rigorous portfolio, interview and application process.  We congratulate Ana Weiss and Nick Knoebel on their accomplishment.

Last fall more than one million high school juniors took the PSAT Test with those who score highest named to the National Merit Program.  Andrew Linkugel, Maya Pillai and Sean Connolly are among 16,000 students in the country who have been named National Merit Semifinalists.  Representing less than 1% of each state's high school seniors, semifinalists are the highest scoring in each state.

Congratulations to sophomore, Lauren Humpert, who won second place in the Boone County Solid Waste Eco-Topic Essay Contest last year.  This essay contest which was open to all students focused on the area of electronic recycling.

The Eagle Scout Award is the highest honor a Boy Scout can receive.  Three St. Henry students have recently received this honor.  Sophomore, Blake Barlow earned his award with a project to refurbish a park in Erlanger.  Volunteers painted shelters and built picnic tables.  Tables were also designed for those wheel chair bound.  Because of his efforts, Erlanger named a Blake Barlow Day and he has been given the honor of being named a Kentucky Colonel.  Another sophomore, Ben Longshore just received his Eagle Scout Award by completing a project at the Baptist Towers in Covington. The Baptist Towers is an assisted living facility that needed improvement in their landscaping.  Along with the landscaping, the project also included installing a flagpole and in October of 2007 on Veterans Day the first flag was raised.  Senior, Ross Hallman refurbished a park in Dayton, OH by removing honeysuckle bushes and building birdhouses for the park.  His project took a total of 231 volunteer hours with Ross putting in 72 hours himself.  We appreciate the time and effort of Blake, Ben, and Ross to better our community.

The YMCA 12th Annual Character Award has become one of Greater Cincinnati’s most treasured awards in recognizing our teens that exemplify the YMCA’s four core values of caring, honest, respect, and responsibility.  I am pleased to announce that the recipient of this year’s YMCA Character Award is senior, Kaitlin Staverman

The Boone County Youth Cabinet was initiated to enable students to participate in areas of county government including law enforcement, budgets, history, and future plans.  Senior, Mary Moloney, Alice Wallenhorst and Jacob Bessler enjoyed the opportunity to explore government processes through this program.

Juniors, Abby Elliston and Louie Tobergte, have been chosen to participate in the Regional Youth Leadership Program during this school year.  These two juniors will attend meetings once a month and trips which will ultimately strengthen their leadership skills.  This past year, senior Maya Pillai, attended the program.

The University of Kentucky sponsors the Class of Kentucky which honors one outstanding sophomore from each high school in the Commonwealth.  These students will also receive special opportunities offered by the university.  We congratulate our representative to the Class of Kentucky, Louie Tobergte.

St. Francis Award:
Despite being born into a privileged and prominent society, St. Francis of Assisi felt a call from God to follow a different path. He left a life of wealth and privilege to find self-satisfaction and service to the poor. Inspired by a passage form the Gospel of St. Matthew – "freely you have received, freely give" (Matt 10:8) – St. Francis spent his life in ministry to others, using daily the gifts and talents that the Lord had given him. His message is best encapsulated in the prayer of his name: "Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy." St. Francis believed that "... it is in giving that we receive," and today we recognize nine St. Henry students who have been nominated by their teachers for following the path of St. Francis – for utilizing their talents and abilities in the classroom, for creating a Christian environment by their effort and attitude, and for admirably serving those around them.

St. Scholastica is the sister of Saint Benedict, and these two siblings walked a very similar path. She founded a religious community for women five miles from where her brother governed a monastery. She visited her brother once a year, and they spent these visits praising God and conferring together on spiritual matters. "Ora et Labora", translated "Pray and Work," is the Benedictine motto that St. Scholastica kept faithfully and cheerfully throughout her life. Driven by this motto, she was able to achieve her personal and spiritual goals, much the same way that our award recipients today have achieved success inside of the classroom.
