Campus Ministry at SHDHS

Spiritual Life

As a Catholic school, part of SHDHS' mission is to educate students in the faith, to foster individual prayer and spirituality, and to put faith into action. This is accomplished by a collaborative approach. Knowledge is gained in religion class, personal prayer and faith is enhanced by active participation in campus sponsored spiritual events and students have many opportunities to put their faith into action. In addition to the school’s formal service requirement, students are encouraged to participate in various groups that promote Christian values such as the C.I.A. Peer Ministry team, liturgy planning team, Maria Goretti Society, S.A.D.D., Crusaders for Life and Planateers.

The campus minister works in tandem with the chaplain, service coordinator, religion teachers, choir director, administration, parents, and parishes to provide an atmosphere and programs that builds the faith life of individuals and the community.
    Opportunities include:
  • Class Retreats
  • Eucharistic Liturgies and the Sacrament of Reconciliation
  • Daily prayer reflections
  • Opportunities for individual prayer, guidance and healing
  • School assemblies, speakers, devotional prayer, seasonal events
  • Service and support to community needs
  • Peer Ministry Team: C I A (Christians in Action)
  • Chapel for reflective prayer
  • Resources for students, faculty, and parents
Retreats

The retreat program is essential to the overall mission of SHDHS. Each class retreat is planned to meet the specific needs of those attending. All retreats are off campus and paid for by student fees. Retreats are mandatory with the exception of Christian Awakening (which is highly recommended). In the event of an absence, a student must make up the required retreat. Arrangements for make-up must be made within one week of the absence with the campus minister. Detailed information about each retreat will be provided to students and parents, including medical and permission forms. The Junior and Senior retreat is offered three times, however the size of each retreat is limited; strict adherence to the registration deadline is necessary to accommodate schedules.

Chapel

Weekly class liturgies, prayer services, religion class devotions, and choir practice is held in the chapel. The Blessed Sacrament is present in the tabernacle and makes the chapel a perfect "go to" place when individuals need to pray and "Be still and know I am God." (Psalm 46:10). Out of respect for the sacred space and the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, individuals are asked to refrain from chewing gum, eating, drinking and socializing when entering the chapel. Upon entering and departing the chapel, especially for Mass, genuflection is an appropriate gesture of recognition and devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. The chapel is open before, during, and after school. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to stop by the chapel for prayer and/or to leave a written prayer request in the "Prayer Jar".

C.I.A. (Christians in Action) - Peer Ministry Team

The C.I.A. team is open to students in all grade levels with the prerequisite that the person applying has an active faith life, participates in the Church to which they belong, and wants to contribute to the overall spiritual well-being of the campus. Team members become a small Christian community as they meet to pray for the school and sharpen servant leadership skills. Each individual discerns with the Campus Minister where they are called to use their gifts. Students have the opportunity to lead retreats, prayer services, and discussion groups, participate in music, drama, and multi-media venues while presenting the gospel message.
