Vision:
SHDHS recognizes that Service is a key to Catholic identity.
The central message is simple; our faith is profoundly social. We cannot be called truly "Catholic" unless we hear and heed the Church's call to serve those in need and work for justice and peace. Communities of Salt and Light, U.S. Bishops, 1993
Thus, the goal of the Christian Service Program is to help students put faith into action through serving those in need and participating in justice and peace initiatives. We answer the challenge to leave our "comfort zone" and to serve those outside our own school and church communities.
"Catholicism does not call us to abandon the world, but to help shape it. This does not mean leaving worldly tasks and responsibilities, but transforming them." Everyday Christianity: To Hunger and Thirst for Justice, U.S. Bishops, November, 1988.
Objectives:
  1. Service Hours - Every student is required to complete a minimum of three service hours per quarter (as specified in the service requirements guidelines).
  2. Grade - Accountability - 10% of each student's religion grade will be determined by the successful completion of the required service and service reflection. (Each religion teacher will grade his or her students' reflection paper.)
  3. Individual Projects - The service coordinator will provide a current and ongoing list of service opportunities within the community, which students can seek to complete individually.
  4. Group Projects - Each quarter, the service coordinator will provide several large scale, group service projects sponsored by SHDHS (provided there are adequate chaperones).
  5. Collaboration & Master Schedule - The service coordinator, in collaboration with the campus minister, religion teachers and administration will set quarterly and yearly service learning and social justice themes that will give students a variety of experiences. All service related clubs, projects, and needs, (such as craft fair, open house, food drives, collections, NHS projects, etc) will be coordinated through the service coordinator to promote an integrated approach and prevent duplication of services.
  6. Supervision - Each SHDHS group sponsored service project will have sufficient supervision and be compliant with diocesan VIRTUS regulations. Faculty, staff, and parent volunteers are needed to help supervise each project. Projects and a list of chaperone duties will be posted on the web and the Service Bulletin board.
Volunteers are encouraged to contact the service coordinator as soon as possible.

Student Requirements (All Grade Levels)

Service for 2 of the Quarters must be conducted in the community with the non-profit agencies or organizations being the beneficiaries. (Check SHDHS web page, SHDHS service bulletin board, ugive.org or nkyhelps.org for opportunities.)

Service for 2 quarters may be conducted at SHDHS or a local parish or church or with a non-profit agency.
Required Documentation for all Grade Levels:
  1. All reflection papers must be typed (12 font, MLA style) and at least one page in length. Include your name, service location, date and class in upper left hand corner. There are different reflection questions for each quarter. Staple the reflection paper to the service verification form.
  2. Students are responsible for submitting a completed service verification form (which includes obtaining the signature and phone number of the adult in charge of the service activity) and the reflection paper on or before the due date.
  3. Late service reflection papers will typically NOT be accepted. Special circumstances need to be discussed with Mrs. Kaiser (mkaiser@shdhs.org) and approved in writing. Credit will NOT be given without a reflection paper.
Grading Guidelines
10% of the theology course grade each quarter will be determined by the satisfactory completion of service hours on the given scale:
3 clock hours completed with paperwork100%
2 clock hours completed with paperwork80%
1 clock hour completed with paperwork60%
0 hours and no paperwork0%
* 5 points will be deducted if a signature is not obtained from a parent or the supervisor of the service.
    Note:
  1. Working to serve friends, family or neighbors does not meet the Service requirements set forth by St. Henry District High School.
  2. Students will not be allowed to complete service during the school day.
  3. If there is any doubt that a certain project will not be approved as an appropriate service site, please obtain pre-approval (in writing) from the service coordinator BEFORE completing the service.
  4. All students will receive a personal Service Portfolio with all pertinent information (due dates, log, requirements and reflections). Students are encouraged to log all service hours, not just the minimum required. This information will be very valuable for college applications and future vocation choices.

Special thanks to the following students who assisted with Special Olympics at Perfect North on Jan. 14th: Aaron Baeten, Ryan Bailer, Brendan Dooley, Paige Dooley, Jacob Fiedler, Craig Fiedler, Madison Foley, Mackenzie Franks, Nathan Gutzeit, Torie Hughes, Lauren Humpert, Nick Lalley, Jared Limbach, Jacob Messmer, Morgen Reinert, Alec Nields, Jonathan Rolfsen, Kirsti Ryan, Mason Sander, Melissa Spare, Jeff Zdinak, and Meghan Helmer.

It was a very rewarding day for all involved. SHDHS was very well represented on the ski slopes. Students were skiing backwards in order to catch their assigned Olympian, who turned out to be their "best buddy". Others wiped snow off their fallen buddies face and assisted them back to their ski's in order to finish the timed race on the bunny hill. Some Olympians just needed words of encouragement and a pat on the back, while others needed a hand on and off the lifts. The SHDHS students made a difference at Perfect North for many Special Olympians. Thanks for all of your efforts!
